Former Vice President Kamala Harris is weighing another presidential run in 2028, but according to the Wall Street Journal, her husband Doug Emhoff has privately told people he would rather she not get back in the race.
People close to Emhoff told the Journal that despite his private reservations, he is expected to support Harris if she ultimately decides to run again.
Harris is not alone in facing skepticism. The Journal reports some donors have told her directly that a 2028 bid would be “a long shot,” and some longtime Harris allies say they are “skeptical” she will run again.
The doubts come after Harris’s 2024 campaign, in which she lost the popular vote, the Electoral College and every swing state to President Trump, despite raising roughly $1.5 billion. Even so, she currently leads the hypothetical Democratic 2028 field by double digits in recent polling.
Signs of groundwork, no decision announced
Harris says she has not decided whether to run again, but she has kept up a visible presence ahead of the midterms. According to the Journal, she has attended private fundraisers for Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate David Crowley and Nevada gubernatorial candidate Aaron Ford.
Last week, she joined a call with the Democratic National Committee and more than 2,000 volunteers, encouraging them to help with get-out-the-vote efforts across a dozen states.
“I have not decided if I’m going to run again,” Harris said at a NAACP event in Michigan last month. “I do sincerely believe ’28 won’t matter if we don’t get through ’26.”
Away from politics, Harris and Emhoff bought an $8 million home in Malibu earlier this year, and Emhoff has taken a position as a partner at the Los Angeles law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.
Harris’s office and Emhoff did not immediately respond to requests for comment from the New York Post.
