Komatireddy Challenges James on Medicaid Fraud Record in New York AG Debate

Republican AG candidate Saritha Komatireddy challenged incumbent Letitia James in a New York debate Thursday, citing figures on Medicaid spending and declining fraud convictions under James’s tenure.

New York Attorney General Letitia James and her Republican challenger, former federal prosecutor Saritha Komatireddy, faced off in a debate Thursday night that centered heavily on the state’s handling of Medicaid fraud enforcement.

During the exchange, Komatireddy cited a series of figures to argue that James’s office has failed to adequately pursue Medicaid fraud. She said New York spends $126 billion on Medicaid annually, which she described as more per resident than any other state and roughly twice the per-resident spending of New Jersey, a state she called demographically and politically similar.

“There’s about $40 billion in unexplained spending that Letitia James has failed to investigate,” Komatireddy said.

Komatireddy also compared Medicaid fraud recoveries and convictions under James to those under prior Democratic attorneys general. She said the state’s Medicaid fraud unit had recovered about $250 million a year under previous administrations, a figure she said dropped to $19 million under James. She further said criminal convictions tied to Medicaid fraud had averaged about 100 a year under earlier attorneys general, but fell to an all-time low of eight under James.

“She gets 2,000 patient abuse complaints a year and secures maybe one or two convictions. That means someone could be punching an elderly patient in a nursing home, and no one is doing anything,” Komatireddy said.

During the debate, James made a statement regarding the role of facts and law in assessing guilt or innocence in a case, telling the audience, “you don’t have to look at the facts and the law.” Komatireddy responded by repeating the line back to the audience, gesturing toward James as she did so.

The race for New York Attorney General, like most statewide contests in the heavily Democratic state, has historically favored Democratic candidates once the primary is settled. Komatireddy’s campaign has framed her bid as an uphill challenge to what she and her supporters describe as entrenched Democratic control of state offices.

The Beltway Report could not independently verify the specific spending and conviction figures cited by Komatireddy during the debate. They were presented as part of her campaign’s criticism of James’s enforcement record.
