A 49-year-old Reading, Massachusetts woman was found shot to death inside her home early Thursday, touching off an hours-long manhunt that ended with her adult son’s arrest in Vermont, authorities said.
Andria Hanafin was discovered in the kitchen of her Reading home at around 12:38 a.m. with an apparent gunshot wound, according to the Reading Police Department. Her husband, Matthew, found her when he returned home from work and called 911. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The couple’s 13-year-old son was in the house at the time of the shooting. He told investigators he had last seen his mother alive around 5 p.m., went out with friends, and returned home at 9 p.m., heading straight to his room, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said at a news conference.
Hanafin’s 22-year-old son, Ryan Hanafin, was not at the home when police arrived, and his 2010 black Dodge Charger was also missing. Investigators soon identified him and his car as connected to his mother’s homicide and launched a search.
District Attorney Ryan said there was no known police contact before the shooting took place. She also said Ryan Hanafin had access to several legally owned firearms.
