Luke Grimes Says He and Kevin Costner Haven’t Spoken Since ‘Yellowstone’ Ended

Luke Grimes, star of the Montana-set ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘Marshals,’ says he hasn’t spoken with former co-star Kevin Costner since Costner left ‘Yellowstone’ in 2024.

Luke Grimes, who played Kayce Dutton on the Taylor Sheridan hit “Yellowstone” and now leads its Montana-set spinoff “Marshals,” says he hasn’t spoken to former co-star Kevin Costner since Costner left the show in 2024.

In an interview with USA Today, Grimes was asked whether Costner, who played family patriarch John Dutton, might ever appear on “Marshals.” Grimes said that was unlikely.

“I haven’t talked to Kevin since we stopped working together. Not for any reason other than we’re busy guys and life moves on,” Grimes said.

Grimes said it would be “cool” if Costner showed up on “Marshals,” but he “doubts” it will happen. He suggested that if there were ever a flashback involving his character’s family, he’d rather it feature Monica, played by Kelsey Asbille, than John Dutton.

“If there was a flashback, I would probably rather it be with Monica than John. I think that would be more poignant to the character, but we’ll see,” Grimes said.

Grimes and Costner shared the screen for four seasons of “Yellowstone.” Costner’s character owned the Yellowstone Ranch, one of the largest cattle operations in the country, while Grimes played his youngest son, a former Navy SEAL torn between the ranch and a life with his wife Monica and son Tate.

Grimes has carried his character forward into “Marshals,” Sheridan’s spinoff that follows Kayce after he leaves the ranch to join an elite U.S. Marshals unit based in Montana.

Costner’s departure from “Yellowstone” followed a prolonged scheduling conflict tied to his film project “Horizon: An American Saga.” Costner has said he prioritized the series and pushed back on suggestions he left purely to focus on his movies, citing production delays and a lack of finished scripts for the back half of season five.

Sheridan addressed the split in June on “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” saying Costner had originally agreed to play John Dutton for only three seasons and was ready to depart then, but stayed on once “Yellowstone” became a breakout success.
