Michael Douglas Says He ‘Never Gave Up Hope’ After 2013 Split From Catherine Zeta-Jones

Michael Douglas says he “never gave up hope” of reconciling with Catherine Zeta-Jones after their brief 2013 separation, addressing the split in a new interview ahead of his memoir’s release.

Michael Douglas says he never lost faith that he and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones would reconcile after their brief separation in 2013, more than a decade after the couple announced they were “taking a break.”

The 82-year-old actor made the comments in a new Sunday Times interview promoting his memoir, “One Helluva Ride,” which hits bookshelves Tuesday. Asked how he “won back” Zeta-Jones, Douglas said, “It was a mutual … You know, we had our problems but I love her dearly and, 25 years, you know.”

He added, “I mean, I don’t know about your marital status, but marriage is a lot of work, you know. And so, you know, we’re good. We’re in good shape. It’s all I can say.”

Asked whether Zeta-Jones, 57, is anxious about the book’s release, Douglas replied simply, “She hasn’t read it.”

Douglas and Zeta-Jones married on Nov. 18, 2000, the same year his divorce from first wife Diandra Luker was finalized. The couple share two children, Dylan, 26, and Carys, 23, both of whom work as actors.

In August 2013, nearly 13 years into the marriage, reports surfaced that the pair were separating. At the time, Douglas told People, “We’re working things out, talking, and we’ll see how she goes.” The two reconciled soon after.

Douglas addressed the split again in 2015 on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” saying, “It can’t be a one-way street. But I’m crazy about her. And yeah, I think every couple has their difficult times.” He noted that because the couple lives “in the public eye,” their private struggles “tend to get a little more exposed than most,” adding, “We’re back stronger than ever.”

Last November, Zeta-Jones marked the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary with a tribute on Instagram. “25 years ago today, I walked down the aisle,” she wrote. “The intoxicating aroma of flowers, the glow of the candles, the resounding harmonious Welsh choir and you at the end of the long walk waiting for me, looking at me the way only you can. I love you today as I did then. Thank you sweetheart.”

In his memoir, Douglas also confirmed he had a secret relationship with his “Romancing the Stone” co-star Kathleen Turner while married to Luker, 70. He said the two were separated at the time but “both having extramarital affairs.” Douglas and Luker share son Cameron, 47.
