Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, joining host Dakota Johnson during her opening monologue to play the role of her friend’s “literal therapist.”
Johnson opened the show by joking about her “two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians.” She riffed on her dating history while comparing it to the theme of her new thriller film, “Verity.”
“Some of them don’t wear shoes, some of them are terrible in bed. All of them are in my DMs. Not my fault, though. Some people leave concerts with merch, I leave concerts with a two-and-a-half-year relationship,” Johnson said.
She added that her friends don’t judge her for her romantic choices. “They’re actually really supportive,” she said, just before Swift walked onto the 30 Rock stage to loud cheers.
“Ladies and gentlemen, my literal therapist,” Johnson announced.
Swift pushed back on the title. “I’m not your therapist, actually. You just show up at my house once a week with an empty bottle of wine and ask me if I want some,” she said. “And then you flop on my couch and overshare and every so often I just say, ‘Damn, that’s crazy.’ Then I go, ‘It’s late, I should really go to bed.’ And then you say…”
“Sleepover yay!” Johnson interrupted.
“Then I give you a Pedialyte and my security drives you home,” Swift said, patting Johnson on the back.
Johnson went on to joke that her dating habits amount to a public service, saving women money on the antidepressant Zoloft. “So you’re welcome, America. Also England and parts of Ireland and Cleveland, allegedly,” she said, a nod to rumors linking her to Cleveland native Machine Gun Kelly. Swift, whose husband Travis Kelce is from Cleveland and plans to live there with her, cheered at the mention.
Swift also noted during the appearance that it was Johnson’s birthday.
The cameo marked Swift’s ninth appearance on “SNL,” a tally that includes four stints as musical guest, one hosting gig, and four cameo appearances.
The two stars have been working together recently: Johnson appears alongside Colin Farrell in Swift’s music video for “Patient Zero,” which Swift directed and co-starred in. The video, which premiered at last week’s MTV Video Music Awards, follows Johnson and Farrell as a wealthy couple whose marriage is unraveling.
Johnson’s past relationships with musicians include Noah Gersh (2007-2010), Drowners frontman Mathew Hitt (2014-2016), and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, whom she dated from 2017 until 2025. In 2026, she and musician Role Model split after less than a year together. More recently, she has been linked to Machine Gun Kelly, with the two reportedly hitting it off at Swift and Kelce’s wedding in July.
