Chapel Hill Alumna Recounts Decades-Long Journey From Feminism Back to Faith

An 82-year-old University of North Carolina alumna says her embrace of feminism as a college student in the 1960s led her away from her Christian faith and eventually to three abortions, before she returned to religion later in life.

Candy Thompson, who attended the University of North Carolina in the 1960s, says she is now in her eighties and looking back on a life that took a sharp turn after she embraced the feminist movement as a college student.

Thompson told Fox News Digital that learning about feminism while at UNC pulled her away from the Christian faith she grew up with. “[Those values] didn’t seem to answer the questions that I was asking. And then I heard about feminism, and that was in the culture … It sounded good because it was about equality,” she said.

She described a turning point during her college years: a miscarriage she experienced in her dorm room between her junior and senior year. Rather than turning to her parents or her faith, she said she kept going as she had been. “I look back at that and see that was when my life began to go really downhill from there,” she said.

After that experience, Thompson married the first man she dated. She said the marriage ended in divorce, and that she had three abortions during the relationship. She now marks those pregnancies with acknowledgment-of-life certificates.

Reflecting on that period, Thompson said she struggled with anger and a lack of clarity about her identity. “I did not understand as a young woman what my actual created purpose was … Those things were not really clear until I returned to my former faith,” she said.

Thompson eventually returned to Christianity, and she now says the feminist ideas she once embraced ultimately let her down. “The feminists pitted [women] against men, they pitted us against having children … It belittled who we were in the home and [as] mothers, and it belittled who we were as just women in a marriage,” she said. “When it pitted us against God even … then that’s what really led to what happened to me.”

Today, Thompson says she and others open their homes to young people from local colleges, describing them as searching for identity and connection. “We have young people from the colleges into our homes and they’re hungry. They are hungry to know who they really are and they want to be married,” she said. “They want to have this love, but they don’t trust men … and having their hearts broken and hurt because we’re made in that way of wanting to have that relationship that is a lifetime relationship.”

“They’re wanting this in their spirits, but they don’t know how to get it because nobody’s telling them. These women are lost,” she added.
