Kai Trump, a University of Miami golfer and granddaughter of President Donald Trump, injured her wrist during her first collegiate tournament this month, complicating the start of her college golf career.
The 19-year-old hurt her wrist at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, held at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. According to Trump, the injury happened early in the competition when she swung near a cart path and struck concrete hidden beneath the ground.
“Let’s just say there must have been some cart path underneath that ground because it was very hard. Hit it, it felt like a shock on my arm,” Trump said in an Instagram video.
She said the injury worsened later in the round.
“Then on the tenth hole, I hit my driver, and I felt like I tore it again,” she said.
Medical tests later showed the damage was less severe than feared, with doctors identifying a small sliver of damage along her ligaments. To avoid missing significant playing time, Trump said she is undergoing stem cell injections from Dr. Jeffrey Weigers, a pain management specialist.
The injury affected her performance at the tournament, where she finished tied for 102nd out of 120 golfers with a 10-over 81.
Trump, daughter of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump, is also navigating a personal transition as she settles into college life away from her hometown of Jupiter, Florida. In recent videos posted to her YouTube channel, she described struggling with homesickness.
“I’m not a very emotional person at all, so this is like really weird for me to cry, I’ve only cried a few times. I think knowing that I have to say goodbye to everyone tonight really, really sucks,” Trump said.
Trump now has time to recover before Miami travels to North Carolina for the Ruth Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course.
