A brief exchange outside Ella Langley’s Sept. 24 concert at Food City Center in Knoxville has turned into a viral moment, after a fan’s request for a date was met with a blunt rejection that has since divided her online audience.
Video of the encounter, posted by TikTok user Tiki, shows the man calling out to Langley through a fence in the parking lot after the show: “Ella, how many likes to take you on a date?” Langley, looking at him with a serious expression, replied, “Not enough in the world,” then frowned and looked away. The fan responded by crossing his arms and telling the camera, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
The clip quickly spread online, with reaction split over whether Langley’s response was fair. Some commenters felt she was too harsh. “This rubbed me the wrong way. And I like her,” one wrote, while another asked, “Literally what is her problem?” A third suggested “she could have laughed and said no in a whole different way.”
Langley addressed the criticism directly in the comments section, explaining her intent. “It was meant to come off as dark humor. You said that and it got quiet and I got nervous,” she wrote.
Fans Rally to Her Defense
Many others pushed back against the backlash, arguing Langley owed the fan nothing. “Being screamed at 24/7 would get irritating,” one supporter wrote. Another was more pointed: “There’s no way yall are mad at her for reacting negatively to a kid screaming at her asking to take her on a date in front of her team??? Yall gotta go outside.”

The Knoxville show came amid a major career milestone for Langley. Her hit “Choosin’ Texas” recently became the longest-running No. 1 song in Billboard’s Hot 100 history, spending 23 weeks atop the chart. Langley marked the achievement in an Instagram video thanking fans for “loving this song.”
“I’m genuinely trying to find the words to help explain what’s going on in my brain today,” she said in the post. “It feels exactly like a ‘We don’t know! What?’ I don’t know. Thank you so much.”
