The Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers meet on Thursday Night Football in a Week 3 matchup notable for the return of Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who missed the season’s first two games with an injury.
Atlanta played its first two weeks with its third-string quarterback under center and struggled offensively. The Falcons lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-13 in Week 1, then managed just three points in Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers, a team that had allowed 59 points in its own season opener.
Penix Jr.’s return puts the pressure on him to jump-start an offense with playmakers including running back Bijan Robinson and receiver Drake London. A loss would put the Falcons at 0-3, a start that often makes it difficult to reach the postseason.
Now in his third NFL season, Penix Jr. has shown incremental improvement since being drafted. As a rookie, he completed 58.1% of his passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions across five games. Last season he completed 60.1% of his passes with nine touchdowns and three interceptions over nine games.
