‘Ted Lasso’ Fans Spot Real-Life Siblings, Book Club Twist and a Roy Kent Callback in Season 4, Episode 7

Season 4, Episode 7 of ‘Ted Lasso’ packed in real-life sibling casting, another Beard’s Book Club pick, an SNL-linked cameo and a returning musical callback for Roy Kent.

The seventh episode of “Ted Lasso” Season 4, titled “Yes & Baby,” gave fans plenty to dig through once the credits rolled. The episode centers on Alice (Tanya Reynolds) trying to adopt a more positive outlook on life, while also spending time on the personal lives of the Lady Greyhounds players, showing Zelda (Tracey Ullman) help Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) with a club issue, and pushing Roy (Brett Goldstein) to confront something he’s been avoiding.

As with earlier episodes this season, viewers combing through the details found a string of references, in-jokes and callbacks tucked into the show, which airs new episodes weekly ahead of its October 7 finale.

A family connection in the cold open

The episode’s cold open shows a typical morning at Lizzie’s (Faye Marsay) house, including her two young sons, Archie and Sean. According to the episode’s end credits, the boys appear to be played by real-life siblings Orion Ginsburg Chan and North Ginsburg Chan.

Another entry in Beard’s Book Club

Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) is shown reading (Re)born in the USA: An Englishman’s Love Letter to His Chosen Home by soccer commentator Roger Bennett, a book about moving from the UK to the U.S. He’s also seen reading Archie’s pick, Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White — notable because Archie misreads the show’s “BELIEVE” sign as “Some pig,” a phrase from the book that saves a doomed pig named Wilbur.

A cameo tied to the players’ pay

The episode touches on the fact that AFC Richmond’s women players work outside jobs because of low salaries, showing Shannon (Shannon Hayes) delivering food on her time off. The man who answers the door for a delivery is played by George Fouracres, a British actor and comedian known for his work on “SNL UK.”

SNL nods and a car with a past

Rebecca, pretending to be Zelda’s secretary, shouts “DA BEARS!” — a reference to a classic “Saturday Night Live” sketch that starred Jason Sudeikis’ late uncle, George Wendt. Hannah Waddingham, who plays Rebecca, has also hosted “SNL UK.” Separately, the car driven by the character known as Boots is the same blue vehicle Holliday Grainger’s character drove in the BBC series “C.B. Strike,” which also featured “Ted Lasso” actor Jeremy Swift. The episode also includes a joke referencing the show “Industry,” which starred Toheeb Jimoh, who plays Sam Obisanya on “Ted Lasso.”

Small details and a returning needle drop

Other spotted details include Ted referring to a statue in Keeley’s office as “Trixiebell,” seemingly a nod to a rare My Little Pony character, and what appears to be the same Arthur Bryant’s photo on Ted’s desktop background from earlier seasons. Dr. Beaumont also tells Roy, “I can fix your knee, but I can’t fix your heart,” echoing the show’s recurring “Wizard of Oz” references. When Rebecca mentions “Chicago Fire,” she’s referring to the Chicago Fire FC soccer club rather than the NBC drama — a nod to Cristo Fernandez, who plays Dani Rojas, having trained with the team before signing professionally with El Paso Locomotive FC.

The episode also brings back Roy’s now-familiar hallway strut, this time on an electric scooter following his knee injury, set to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ “Red Right Hand” — the same Peaky Blinders theme previously used for his “Roy Kent Walk.”
