Nick Reiner is scheduled to return to a Los Angeles County courtroom on Tuesday for the latest proceedings in the case accusing him of killing his parents, film director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner.
Nick Reiner faces two counts of murder, along with special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and lying in wait, following a grand jury indictment. Prosecutors have also alleged he used a knife in the killings.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman commented on the case when the indictment was announced, saying, “This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.”
Prosecutors say Nick Reiner fatally stabbed his father, 78, and mother, 70, on Dec. 14, 2025, at the family’s Brentwood home.
Los Angeles Fire Department officials responded to the Brentwood-area residence at around 3:30 p.m. that day after two bodies were discovered. Officials later confirmed the bodies belonged to Rob and Michele Reiner.
“Both victims were found in the master bedroom of the area of the home,” LAPD Assistant Police Chief Dominic Choi said during a Board of Police Commissioners meeting. Officers conducted what was described as a thorough search of the residence and found no additional victims or suspects.
Fight Over Trust Fund
As the criminal case moves toward trial, Nick Reiner has also filed a petition seeking access to a $1.5 million trust fund, arguing he has been unlawfully blocked from money he says is already legally his.
Reiner has said he needs the funds to pay for his criminal defense and for basic necessities while he is incarcerated. The petition came months after he was jailed in connection with his parents’ deaths.
Attorney Alan Jackson, who previously represented Karen Read, had been representing Reiner but stopped after anticipated funding from the family failed to materialize. In a declaration, Jackson said his firm would be willing to return to the case if funding became available, including through alternative fee arrangements.
