Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay says he nearly walked away from coaching after the team’s rough 2022 season, until his wife, Veronika Khomyn, pushed back on the idea.
McVay has had only one losing season since taking over as the Rams’ head coach before the 2017 campaign. That season came in 2022, when the Rams went 5-12, just a year after winning Super Bowl LVI over the Cincinnati Bengals.
In an interview on “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday night, McVay said he was in a “dark” place following that season and considered stepping away from coaching to pursue media opportunities that had been offered to him.
“I was ready to run away from coaching and hide behind a convenient narrative of some media opportunities,” McVay said. “I’ll never forget, I was explaining to my wife, Veronika, it was a daunting task ahead for the ’23 season and I remember telling her, ‘Maybe I’ll take a year off,’ and she said, ‘That never sounded like the kind of leader you wanted to be.'”
McVay said the exchange became the turning point he needed.
“I think it was the wake-up call that I needed. … I would have been quitting. That would have been the truth. I would have been quitting because I couldn’t handle the losses.”
The Rams recovered from that 2022 season, putting together back-to-back 10-7 records before going 12-5 in 2025 and advancing to the NFC Championship game. Los Angeles lost that game to the Seattle Seahawks, who went on to win the Super Bowl.
McVay remains the Rams’ head coach, and the team has retooled its roster in pursuit of another championship run, trading for Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns and bringing Aaron Donald out of retirement.
The Rams opened this season with a Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Australia. They return to Los Angeles for a Monday night home game in Week 2 against the New York Giants.
