$38 French Dip Sandwich Draws Long Lines at US Open in New York

A $38 French dip sandwich from West Village restaurant Salt Hank’s is drawing long lines of fans at the US Open in New York despite its steep price.

A $38 French dip sandwich is drawing half-hour lines at the US Open in New York, with fans lining up despite the steep price tag typical of stadium concessions.

The sandwich comes from Salt Hank’s, a West Village restaurant, and features prime rib, provolone cheese, caramelized onions and horseradish aioli, served with a side of shoestring fries and a cup of au jus for dipping.

Despite the cost, reports indicate the stand is selling the sandwich in large numbers at this year’s tournament, held in New York County.

The high price point echoes a broader trend at major sporting events, where premium food items have become part of the spectacle. Concession stands at large venues have increasingly leaned into elevated, expensive offerings, from gourmet hot dogs to specialty sandwiches, as part of the overall fan experience.

Eating the sandwich in a stadium setting presents its own challenges, given that au jus is prone to spilling if not handled carefully while seated or standing in a crowd. Even so, fans appear willing to accept both the mess and the expense for a bite of the viral item.
