A resurfaced 2020 podcast episode featuring Victor Marx, the Republican nominee for Colorado governor, has drawn attention for his description of what he called a direct encounter with Satan.
Talking Points Memo first reported on the episode, in which Marx, a Marine veteran and Christian ministry leader, said, “I’ve met the devil” and “I’ve met Satan in person, through a person.”
Marx said the encounter took place while he was praying for a girl held in a high-security youth prison in Texas. “This girl started manifesting a demon,” he said, adding that the moment felt “so real that all the other locked up girls, all the other gang members, man, they all kind of huddled in a corner.”
He described what followed as “horrible,” saying the demon “just really manifested pretty nasty.” When he asked it to identify itself, Marx said it replied, “I am Satan.” He told listeners, “If you think I’m joking, I’m not.”
“All of a sudden, this demon goes, ‘I guess you’re going to say I’m possessed.’ And I just — I just started laughing,” Marx said. “I was like, ‘I don’t think I have to. It’s kind of obvious.’ I mean, really, that’s — I just snickered, which makes the devil mad.”
Marx said he could tell the girl, whom he called “just adorable,” “had a demon in her.” He is the founder of All Things Possible Ministries, a Christian organization whose stated mission is “setting captives free spiritually, emotionally and physically.”
An unconventional ticket
Marx won the Colorado GOP gubernatorial nomination earlier this summer and drew attention for assembling an all-Marine ticket, pairing himself with running mate George Markert, a retired Marine colonel. Marx has argued the pair bring the “steely spines” needed to counter what he describes as a growing democratic socialist movement in state and national races.
He has framed his long-shot campaign around public safety, social conservatism and the cost of living, presenting himself and Markert as political outsiders offering discipline and accountability. The campaign follows a string of primary wins for the Democratic Party’s left flank nationally, including in Colorado, where democratic socialist Melat Kiros defeated longtime incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette.
Marx faces Democrat Phil Weiser, Colorado’s attorney general, who is favored to win the race to succeed term-limited Gov. Jared Polis, also a Democrat.
