Sen. John Fetterman has been hospitalised after “feeling lightheaded” while attending a Democrat event in Washington DC.
Less than 24 hours after appearing at Biden’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, Fetterman, the newly-elected Democrat who suffered a stroke during the campaign trail last year before his victory over Republican candidate, Dr Mehmet Oz, was taken to The George Washington University Hospital on Wednesday for “feeling lightheaded,” when at a retreat for Senate Democrats in Washington DC.
In a statement from his Director of Communications, Joe Calvello, initial tests by doctors did not show any evidence that he had suffered another stroke, but Calvello confirmed that the doctors were running more tests, with Fetterman remaining overnight for observation.
“He is in good spirits and talking with his staff and family,” Calvello noted, confirming that the staff would release more information on Fetterman’s health when it becomes available. We will provide more information when we have it.”

Fetterman suffered his initial stroke in May of last year, just before he won the Pennsylvania Senate Democratic primary. Following the stroke, he had surgery to implant a pacemaker with a defibrillator. In October, his doctor declared that he continues to “exhibit symptoms of an auditory processing disorder which can come across as hearing difficulty.”
Since then, he began the use of a closed captioning device to help him, including during an interview with NBC News, and in the main debate against Dr Oz in October.
Just this month, the Senate began installing a special closed caption display at his desk in the chamber, allowing him to read the captions in real time as other Senators talk on the floor. During committee hearings, Fetterman will have access to a tablet displaying captions written by professional writers.
After video was released from his swearing in ceremony in January, critics described Fetterman’s behaviour as “strange,” noting that his eyes were darting around the room with a “lost expression,” and that he seemed to display no emotion, even when his family joined him during the special moment.
