Trump Signs Order Cutting Funds for Schools and Colleges with DEI Policies

President Donald Trump recently took decisive action by signing an executive order aimed at eliminating federal funding for educational institutions that enforce diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

This move specifically targets K-12 schools and higher education institutions that depend on federal aid, such as special education programs and Pell Grants. The order stipulates that these schools must comply within 120 days or risk losing federal support.

The executive order intends to promote merit-based practices and equal opportunity by conducting civil compliance investigations into educational institutions with endowments exceeding $1 billion.

This could potentially affect some of the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities, which are known for their substantial financial reserves. The order argues that DEI initiatives not only contravene federal civil-rights laws but also undermine national unity.

Supporters of the order, including groups like Parents Defending Education, argue that it is a vital step towards reinstating merit-based practices. They believe it will encourage schools to focus on academic excellence and American exceptionalism.

Nicki Neily, the founder and president of Parents Defending Education, praised the order, stating it honors parental rights and fosters critical thinking while protecting students from indoctrination.

Critics, however, express concerns that this move does little to support student growth and development. The National Education Association (NEA) voiced its opposition, with President Becky Pringle stating that Trump’s actions fail to provide resources, opportunities, or support to students, regardless of their background. The NEA believes that all students deserve the chance to reach their full potential, and this order does not contribute to that goal.

There are also worries about the broader effects of the order on smaller federally funded programs. Neal McCluskey from the Cato Institute’s Center for Education Freedom highlighted that initiatives supporting nutrition, career, and technical education might be at risk if they align with DEI policies.

The potential loss of funding for these programs raises concerns about the future of accelerated learning recovery and other essential educational services.

The directive further extends to credentialing agencies under the Council of Higher Education Accreditation. As federally funded research and programs rely on compliance with accreditation standards, the order aims to reshape how federal funds are allocated across educational institutions.

This restructuring seeks to ensure that federal support is directed towards schools that adhere to principles of fairness and equal opportunity, free from what is perceived as divisive policies.

The executive order reflects a broader backlash against DEI practices across various sectors, with critics labeling them as neo-racist policies that spur cultural and legal revolts against corporate social engineering.

Some major corporations, like Meta and Amazon, have also begun rolling back their DEI initiatives amid a changing political landscape. This trend signifies a shift in how diversity policies are perceived and implemented in both educational and corporate settings.

While the order has sparked controversy, it aligns with a growing sentiment against what some view as ‘woke’ policies. Recent actions by companies like McDonald’s, which have abandoned DEI policies, represent victories for those opposing such initiatives. These developments suggest a significant shift in public and private sectors toward more merit-based approaches.
