OPINION| In the ever-evolving landscape of American politics, it’s not uncommon for public figures to engage in verbal sparring matches. Recently, former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard took Vice President Kamala Harris to task over her comments questioning the loyalty of JD Vance, a Marine Corps veteran and the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in Ohio. Gabbard’s remarks were a scathing critique of Harris’s characterization of Vance’s commitment to the country, and they struck a chord with many Americans who value service and sacrifice.
The controversy began when Vice President Harris claimed that JD Vance would be loyal only to former President Donald Trump, not to the country. This assertion drew the ire of Gabbard, who took to social media to express her outrage. In a series of tweets, Gabbard highlighted Vance’s military service and his willingness to put his life on the line for the country. She questioned whether Harris had ever made a similar sacrifice.
Donald Trump has picked his new running mate: J.D. Vance.
He will be loyal only to Trump, not to our country.
If elected, he will help implement the extreme Project 2025 plan for a second Trump term. We’re not going to let that happen. pic.twitter.com/z4UKczVdbv

Gabbard’s critique of Harris was sharp and unyielding. She pointed out that Vance had enlisted in the Marine Corps after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and had deployed to Iraq in 2005. Gabbard, who also served in the military, drew a stark contrast between Vance’s service and Harris’s lack thereof.
“JD Vance put his life on the line for our country,” Gabbard said. “He served in the Marine Corps and deployed to Iraq. He knows what it means to sacrifice for the greater good. Has Kamala Harris ever made a similar sacrifice?”
Gabbard’s comments highlight a larger issue in American politics: the importance of service and sacrifice. While not everyone is called to serve in the military, those who do make a commitment to protect and defend the country and its values. Their service should be respected and honored, not questioned or belittled.

Gabbard stated that JD Vance enlisted himself in the Marine Corps after the 9/11 attacks and was deployed to Iraq in 2005. She asked, “Was Kamala Harris willing to put her own life on the line in service to our country at any time in the past?”…
“Someone who deployed to Iraq in 2005, the same year that I was there, during the height of that war, putting his own life on the line in service to our country. Was Kamala Harris willing to put her own life on the line in service to our country at any time in the past? Is she now? No. Kamala Harris is driven by her own political ambition. She’s a self-serving politician who should not be in office,” she added.
