Ron DeSantis, the Republican Governor of Florida, announced on Tuesday that he will ban the Chinese Communist Party from buying land in Florida.
In a statement, DeSantis said that he is “totally committed” to protecting Florida’s economy and security from what he calls Beijing’s efforts to “co-opt our democracy.”
DeSantis’ announcement comes after reports surfaced last year that the Chinese Communist Party was exploring ways to purchase land in Florida.
The party is not currently banned from owning property in the United States, but DeSantis’ decision could set a precedent for other states to follow suit.
Critics of DeSantis’ decision say that it is unnecessary and unconstitutional.
They argue that the party does not pose a threat to American democracy and should be allowed to buy land in order to investment in the state.
Others say that banning the party would only serve to further alienate China from America and weaken our relationship with one of our key economic partners.
The race for Governor of Florida is close, and this announcement could play a significant role in determining who wins.
If DeSantis is successful in his bid, it will likely be seen as a victory for hardline anti-China sentiment in America. If he falls short, it could be seen as another sign of how hostile America has become towards Beijing
