Cathy Areu, a self-described “Liberal Sherpa” who gained notoriety while advancing extreme left wing narratives on Fox News, has been arrested and charged with kidnapping her 88-year-old mother and defrauding her of more than $200,000.
Areu, once mocked on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” for claiming children should be raised as nonbinary “theybies,” is facing felony charges that The Daily Mail reportsinclude kidnapping, exploitation of the elderly, and organized scheme to defraud.
Florida authorities claim that Areu falsified documents to seize control of her mother’s assets, including her bank accounts and reverse mortgage, and opened credit cards in her name, according to The Daily Mail. It’s alleged she stole $220,000 from her elderly mother.

The investigation reportedly began in 2019, the outlet revealed, when the state received reports that Areu was defrauding her elderly mother.
Police say that, in one case, Areu deceived her mother by offering to take her out for ice cream. Instead, she transported her elderly mother to “a home,” reported The Daily Mail, where the staff was instructed to forbid her from using the phone or seeing visitors.
Doctors later found her her mother competent to make her own decisions, but court documents claim that Areu then “physically dragged her from her house and took her to another facility,” according to The Daily Mail.
Though her appearances on Fox News remain memorable years later, The Daily Mail reports that she was not a paid Fox News employee, nor was she paid for her appearances on Tucker Carlson’s show or any other Fox programming.
After fading from relevancy, in 2020 Areu accused both Carlson and colleague Sean Hannity of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit that also named other Fox News employees and executives.
The network dismissed Areu’s salacious allegations as “patently frivolous and utterly devoid of any merit,” according to The Gateway Pundit. That outlet highlighted a 2019 tweet showing Areu praise Carlson as “polite” during their interactions.
Areu is being held without bond at the Miami-Dade County Jail.
Authorities say she will remain in custody as the investigation continues.
