HBO has confirmed that David Letterman and Matt Damon make brief cameo appearances in the Season 4 premiere of “The Gilded Age,” the network’s period drama set in New York City.
The two appear walking across East 61st Street roughly eight minutes and 44 seconds into the episode, titled “Ring the Bells,” which is now streaming on HBO Max. The moment comes right after a tense scene involving Hector, the Duke of Buckingham, played by Ben Lamb, who is forced to choose between Gladys, played by Taissa Farmiga, and their baby back in Sidmouth, England. It’s followed by a shot of armed guards outside the Russell mansion and a telephone being installed inside.
Both men are dressed as 19th-century gentlemen and sporting period-appropriate facial hair, a notable look for Damon, who typically appears clean-shaven, and a familiar one for Letterman, who has worn a bushy beard in recent years.
Damon’s affection for HBO programming isn’t new. Earlier this year, he and his “The Odyssey” co-star Tom Holland were asked by Tom “TommyInnit” Simons about their favorite comfort shows. Damon said he was watching “The Wire” with his kids at the time.
“I’m watching The Wire with my kids right now,” Damon said, adding that he’s also introducing his teenage daughters to AMC’s “Breaking Bad” and watching “The Sopranos” with another of his children.
“I like introducing them to some of the good long-form stuff,” he said.
With his cameo in “The Gilded Age,” it appears Damon can now add HBO’s Gilded Age-era New York drama to his own viewing list as well.
