A new poll on Michigan’s open U.S. Senate race shows Democrat Abdul El-Sayed leading Republican Mike Rogers by seven points, according to a report cited by conservative outlet RedState.
The race pits Rogers, a former Republican congressman, against El-Sayed, a health care worker and Democratic candidate, for a seat that will help determine the balance of power in the Senate heading into 2026.
Rogers ran for Senate in 2024 and lost to Elissa Slotkin by roughly 20,000 votes. President Trump endorsed Rogers early in the current campaign.
On Monday, Rogers released a statement tying the war between Israel and Iran to gas and grocery prices for Michigan families.
“Michigan families are struggling with the price of everyday life. Groceries cost too much. We have to bring prices down. The war with Iran needs to end, and end quickly. When it does, energy costs will plummet. But Michigan families can’t afford to wait for that to happen,” Rogers said.
Rogers also renewed a previous call to suspend the state and federal gas tax, which he said totals 70 cents a gallon.
El-Sayed, for his part, campaigned Monday in Michigan alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost the state in the 2024 presidential election. El-Sayed has said he would push for Medicare for All if elected.
Michigan has not sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate in 32 years, a streak Rogers is trying to break in a state that also saw Harris lose ground compared to the 2020 presidential race even as she still carried it.
The Senate contest is one of several closely watched Michigan races this cycle, alongside contests for governor, secretary of state and attorney general.
